2024 Glasser Award Winner: Gary Partridge

Each year, we present the Glasser Award, named after our founder John Glasser, to an individual who demonstrates a deep passion for children’s literacy. Through his generous donation of time and resources, Mr. Glasser tutored children at Barrett Elementary. He encouraged his wife and friends to join him as tutors.

Our 2024 John Glasser Award winner, Gary Partridge, lives his life in service to others. His commitment to the students he works with is unparalleled. He has volunteered with Better Basics for 6 years and has served in schools including Washington, Avondale, and Tuggle Elementaries. He has a servant’s heart and is always willing to help our students when and where needed.

Reading Programs Coordinator Geovanna Caves says, “Gary would double up on his visits. Instead of one day a week, he would go two days each week, doubling the 20-session goal! That effort equates to twice as much one-on-one instructional time for his students working to improve their reading proficiency, and it made a big impact.”

In the middle of this school year, our Volunteer Coordinator, Betty Wells, learned of two students needing a Reading Mentor. Gary accepted two more 2nd-grade students at Avondale Elementary in addition to the two he already had at Tuggle Elementary.

Gary says, “I enjoy seeing the students make progress in reading over the months that I am with them. My grandsons are in Huntsville. I consider the children my “adopted” grandchildren when I have the privilege of mentoring them.”

Gary, accompanied by his wife Debbie, received his award at the Love for Literacy Breakfast. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our children, Gary!
