Book Nooks
The Book Nooks by Better Basics initiative is one of Better Basics’ community literacy outreach programs. Better Basics places and dedicates Book Nooks in economically challenged areas of the metro-Birmingham area to serve communities with access to free books and to encourage reading. Our motto is, “Take a book; you don’t have to leave a book!” The Better Basics staff and volunteers replenish the Book Nooks regularly.
More high-quality used children’s books are needed, and contributions from civic organizations or club projects are welcomed. Better Basics serves “Book Nook” locations in Birmingham’s public spaces and underserved neighborhoods.
Better Basics maintains 28 Book Nooks in Jefferson, St. Clair, and Shelby counties. We kept them stocked with approximately 4000 books overall in the 2022-2023 year.
