Book Distribution

At Better Basics, book access is essential: all 12 of our programs distribute books because research shows that having books in homes is the strongest predictor of a child’s academic success. Our Book Distribution programs focus specifically on delivering free, high-interest books to children in schools, neighborhoods, and homes across Central Alabama.

Last year, Better Basics distributed more than 199,000 books-including our work as the Local Program Partner for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in Jefferson and Walker Counties.

Building home libraries, one book at a time

Better Basics Reads

Better Basics Reads is a synchronized reading event held each May across school districts in Greater Birmingham. Volunteers read aloud in pre-K through 5th grade classrooms and every student receives a copy of the featured book to take home. This signature event celebrates literacy, strengthens community partnerships, and helps build home libraries for thousands of children.

In 2025, Better Basics Reads served more than 13,000 students. School partners included: Birmingham City Schools, Bessemer City Schools, Fairfield City Schools, i3 Academy, and Restoration Academy.

Books for Birmingham

Books for Birmingham is a year-round book distribution program that gifts new books to children. Through partnerships with local organizations, community agencies, and schools, this program ensures that children throughout Birmingham can take home books that inspire curiosity, joy, and learning.

Book Nooks

Book Nooks are neighborhood-based mini-libraries designed to increase access to free children’s books. Located in community centers, housing communities, and partner sites across Central Alabama, each Book Nook is regularly stocked with high-interest books that children can take home to keep—encouraging families to read together and supporting literacy beyond the classroom. There are 51 structures across Central Alabama.
