Birmingham Reads 2017

Better Basics partners with the Junior League of Birmingham each year for the Birmingham Reads project that is designed to inspire all of Birmingham to pick up a book and read.

Birmingham Reads Day is scheduled for Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 1 p.m. Birmingham Reads is an event held each spring, when hundreds of volunteers visit students in pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade classes in Birmingham City Schools to read to the children. Each class is assigned a volunteer reader, and each student receives a book to take home to start, or add to, his or her home library. For more information or to sign up to read at your favorite Birmingham City elementary school, contact Kathleen Drake at volunteer@betterbasics.org.

DSC00427You can also participate in the Birmingham Reads Book Drive. We will be collecting new and gently used children’s books that will be distributed to students through Better Basics’ programs. Many schools and businesses organize books drives throughout the year to support the Birmingham Reads Book Drive Challenge. If your group, school, or company is interested in being a part of the Birmingham Reads Book Drive Challenge, please contact Kathleen DrakeĀ at volunteer@betterbasics.org.

If you do not have books to donate, click here to make a donation. Scholastic is a strong support of Better Basics and is able to give us discounts on many of their titles. By donating through Scholastic, we are able to purchase a brand new book for the fraction of the listed price.
