Better Basics is now the host for the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program. This program helps parents in low income areas by giving them the tools to help start their child on the path to life-long learning. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library offers Better Basics a unique opportunity to do something simple and powerful for our community by inspiring parents and care givers to read to their children.
Each month, from the day a child is born until his or her fifth birthday, a carefully-selected book arrives in the mail. This will create a home library of up to 60 books and instill a love of books and reading from an early age.
National studies indicate that children raised in poverty are exposed to far fewer words during their early years and are likely to reach school with smaller vocabularies than their peers from middle-income families. Through this program, Better Basics hopes to provide 3,800 of Birmingham’s most disadvantaged children with one of the primary tools to prepare them for success in school – the gift of books.
