Better Basics Executive Director Karen Kapp has announced her retirement as of November 27, 2015. Karen has been Better Basics’ executive director since 2008 and a part of Better Basics since 1998.

The Better Basics Board of Directors also announced that Dr. Ammie Akin will replace Karen as Better Basics’ executive director.

Her positions have earned recognition citywide as “Teacher of the Year” and accolades from local media for exceptional teaching. Additionally, she has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in education. Most recently, Ammie created and implemented the Better Basics 30 A Day summer reading program. She earned an undergraduate degree in special education from the University of Alabama, and later, Master of Science, Education Specialist, and Doctor of Education degrees from Samford University.

We will miss Karen and her tremendous leadership, and we look forward to continuing our efforts under Ammie’s direction.
