Birmingham Reads 2018
April 19 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
BE A PART OF BIRMINGHAM READS
Don’t miss your chance to be a part of the largest children’s literacy event in our community, Birmingham Reads. The Birmingham Reads project is presented by Better Basics, the Junior League of Birmingham, and Scholastic.
More than 700 community volunteers will visit every preschool through fifth-grade class in Birmingham City Schools on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 1 p.m. A volunteer will be assigned to each class to read an age-appropriate book and then provide a copy of that book to each child to take home to add to his or her home library. According to The Handbook of Early Literacy Research, literacy challenges can be intensified in low-income areas where there is only one age-appropriate book for every 300 children. However, when struggling readers are provided with the right tools, they can overcome these challenges and improve their reading skills, thus reducing the likelihood that they will fall behind or drop out of school. By providing each elementary-aged child in Birmingham City Schools a book to take home, Birmingham Reads will help ensure the children in our community are not a part of this statistic.
We encourage companies, social service organizations and all civic minded individuals to volunteer on this special day! Sign up Deadline is March 30, 2018 For more information or to sign up as a volunteer, please email our Volunteer Coordinator, Amy Howe, at email@example.com
